About the Rolling Rainforest
Created for underserved elementary schools in the Washington, DC area,
the
Rolling Rainforest serves thousands of students and teachers who face
transportation challenges and tight operating budgets. This mobile
outreach initiative also visits community centers, health clincis, festivals,
and museums throughout the nation.
The
Rolling Rainforest is an innovative learning experience that brings
science to life - engaging students, teachers, and communities around education.
During
Rolling Rainforest programs, students have the opportunity to explore the ancient Mayan culture, take on the rolls
of conservation scientists, and discover the plants and animals that are unique to the neotropical rainforest
environment.

About the Exhibit:
- Sara Schneidman, the artist who painted the original art on the exterior of the Rolling Rainforest, worked in partnership with Discovery Creek educators to ensure that each animal represented on the truck is from a neo-tropical rainforest and is anatomically correct.
- The artwork on the sides of the truck is a screen of an original painting by Sara Schneidman that was made into several giant panels (thanks to 3M technology) that were mounted as a triptych on each side of the truck to create a panoramic scene.
- Artists and exhibition designers at Chase Studio, Inc. hand-crafted each animal
and plant in the
Rolling Rainforest. The
Rolling Rainforest
took more than 5,000 hours of work to assemble!
- All of the animals represented in the
Rolling Rainforest are cast from
mounted specimens and all plants and trees are cast from live or cast-molded
specimens. A Mayan specialist, Pat Ancona, from the Los Angeles County Art Museum,
created the composite Mayan stela.
