Anacostia Initiative

Discovery Creek launched its Anacostia Initiative in June 2003, to provide a full-range of environmental education programs at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Through a partnership with the National Park Service, Discovery Creek encourages children to respect living things, care for the environment, conserve natural resources, and understand the importance of healthy ecosystems. Students engage in critical thinking assignments, community service projects, group dynamic activities, and hands-on problem solving. As children develop a greater appreciation for the earth, they learn to apply these useful skills in their daily lives.

Currently, Discovery Creek provides environmental education programs to students in kindergarten through fifth grade, enhancing and enriching the school's science curriculum. Students participate in a four-part series program which includes an in class lesson and 3 field experiences. This comprehensive curriculum meets the District of Columbia's Science Content Standards and the Science Scope and Sequence.
